Author and Writer Tools

  1. Character Chart - "At the heart of almost every piece of fiction is a character who must solve a problem or strive for a goal. Understanding characters is an important part of navigating a novel or short story.  Understanding how you know about characters is an important part of being a metacognitive reader."
  2. Freewrite - A little on the pricey side but a great concept and it's really cool looking. It takes the distraction, i.e. Internet away from you while you write. I'd love to talk to someone who has one and try it out for myself. That keyboard scares me a little since I use an ergonomic keyboard.
  3. Scapple - "Ever scribbled ideas on a piece of paper and drawn lines between related thoughts? Then you already know what Scapple does. It's a virtual sheet of paper that lets you make notes anywhere and connect them using lines or arrows."
  4. Scrivener - Where would I be without Scrivener? This is where I write all of my manuscripts. I bought it years ago, took the time to learn it, and have never looked back.
    1. "Scrivener is the go-to app for writers of all kinds, used every day by best-selling novelists, screenwriters, non-fiction writers, students, academics, lawyers, journalists, translators and more. Scrivener won't tell you how to write—it simply provides everything you need to start writing and keep writing."
  5. SOAPSTone: A Strategy for Reading and Writing aka SOAPS technique - "“SOAPS” is a technique developed by the College Board and is used to analyze a text. It is designed to help you to understand the rhetorical situation of a specific text; that is, how the interaction among speaker/writer, reader/audience, and subject determine the form the text will take." - AP Language & Composition
  6. WordCloud - "A visual depiction of a collection of words." This is a good way to SEE which words are most prominent in your manuscript.
    1. 10 Ways to Use Word Clouds - Be careful, I don't think these links are safe, but the listed ideas are great.
